Fulton NY to Boonville NY Sept 17 (84 miles)
Today was a pretty good day. Got up early and wrote in my journal about the previous two days. Had a nice stay at the camp on the lake in Fulton. I kept hearing big splashes in the water during the night. I think it might have been Pike feeding but I am not sure.
My poison ivy continue to improve every day so that is very good for me. I don’t really enjoy poison all that much.
There seems to be a lot of very Patriotic people here in New York. A high percentage of people here fly US Flags on their homes. That seems to be a more common trend as I rode from the West to the East. A lot of flags from Montana going East. I assume that 9-11 had a lot to do with all the flags in New York but I also saw a lot of Flags in Canada including not only Canadian Flags but a fair number of US Flags there also. I am Proud to be an American and serve in the National Guard of our Country. I think we have a pretty great country.
I got ready to leave the camp and it started raining so I put on my rain gear and started to ride. It only rained for about an hour so that was nice. The rain quit but it stayed cloudy and cool all day long. The wind was blowing in my face of course but I don’t care about that anymore. New York is very beautiful but a little too crowded with people for my liking. There is a steady stream of houses on every highway I have been on. The highways have pretty good shoulders and that is nice. I have not had any problems with traffic.
I pushed pretty hard to get to Boonville today because Lori sent me a package with some business cards and some Power Bars and I wanted to get to the Post Office before they closed. I got there about 4:30 which wasn’t too bad. About 81 miles to Boonville. This part of New York is very very hilly. The hills generally don’t climb forever like Washington, but some of them are very steep. They don’t hurt as bad to climb as they did a month ago. I am a little stronger than I was when I started this trip. Again, I continue to meet polite, nice people wherever I go. They are willing to help out with advice and directions any time I ask. I ate a nice dinner at a little café (Boonville Hotel Restaurant) in Boonville and then found a nice camp at the Brown Barn Campground and he only charges cyclists $6.00. He put me in a nice renovated barn with a shower and TV and I don’t even have to get my tent wet from the dew or rain. Very Nice. The caretakers name is Dan. I didn’t watch the TV because I would much rather sort and name photos for my family and friends so that’s what I do in my spare time.
I met a couple of Mormon Missionaries walking down the street in Pulaski. They had big smiles on their faces and seemed to be busy. I stopped and talked to them for a minute.
It’s getting more hilly and colder. Winter is just about here. I will need to purchase some warmer gloves in the next few days. When I get higher in the mountains, I will need them.

Dan
Boonville NY to Long Lake NY sept 18 (77 Miles)
Had a nice stay at the Brown Barn in Boonville. Dan the caretaker was very nice, it was a great place to stay . Very nice facility.
Got going about 8:00 AM after working on the computer for awhile this morning. This part of New York is very hilly so I am working hills all day. Some of them are very steep but they are not real long so that is ok. It started to rain pretty quickly this morning. I put on my rain gear then it quit raining and I started to sweat so I took it back off. Well of course it started raining again so I put it back on and of course it stopped raining so I took it back off. About 11:00 it started raining and I said forget it and rode in the rain. Then it really started raining hard and I got soaking wet. By then I was at Old Forge NY and so I stopped to get a bite to eat at the 5 Corners Restaurant. Good food, homemade bread, pretty reasonable prices. I got warmed up and got back on the road. This afternoon it was very windy, cloudy and rainy. It finally cleared up about 4:00 pm but it remained very windy. I lost some time today with the rain and everything so I rode for an hour in the dark to try and get a few more miles. I finally made it past 70 miles, but I was riding in the dark for an hour or so. I saw a sign on my map for a state campground off the road a little ways and I thought it would be a good place to stay. I rode three miles off my route to get there and they wanted $22.00 to camp there. Same price for a Winnebago as a bicycle. It just didn’t make any sense to me to give a guy $22.00 to put my tent on the ground at 9:00 at night and then pack it back up at 6:00 AM and leave so I turned around and went down the road and found a spot in the woods. I tried very hard to avoid the poison ivy. The woods are so thick right here that it is almost impossible to push my bike inside so I just slept about 30 feet off the road in a wide spot. It worked fine.
It is getting very cold now. I purchased a warmer pair of gloves in Old Forge today. I am very glad I did because it is very cold at night and in the mornings now. This morning (Sat the 19th) it was about 40 degrees. I was riding my bike down the highway at 7:00 AM and was going down a hill about 30 miles per hour and my face was freezing off. I wish I had my beard at times like this. That ugly beard kept my face pretty warm. Oh Well, I’ll probably live.
I saw several deer today in or near Old Forge, NY. Several deer crossed the road right in the middle of the city at lunch time. (See photos) They were not very spooked and they acted like they knew what they were doing. The doe waited for several minutes and checked for traffic prior to crossing the street. It was pretty funny watching her. Her fawns were not as careful. She will need to do some more training for them. Once again I met some very nice people. One old local lady about 80 years old riding her bike for exercise. She was still very spry and in good shape. Several people said she would ride with me if I needed a companion. She was pretty lively. Several people in the café were interested in my bike ride and wanted the blog for it. Several of those people also just completed a 90 mile canoe race with 7 miles of portages. That would be interesting to go on a 17 hour canoe ride.
I should make it to Ticonderoga Park, NY tomorrow hopefully. I am in the Adirondacks now and they are very hilly but not quite as steep or as big as what I had to deal with in Washington. The countryside here in New York is very beautiful and scenic. Lots of people own second homes around Old Forge and stay here in the summer.
It seems that I am climbing hills continually all day long now, but at least the hills are not man killers like in Washington. They might be a little bit steeper sometimes but they don’t last as long.
I am a little tired, a little cold, and a little wet tonight. I am going to bed. No Doves sang to me today. I will have to catch them later. I did see some deer, a red Newt, a nice slug in a tree and some pretty country. My poison ivy continues to get better every day so that is good. There is no cell phone reception here in Long Lake so I will have to send this message later.
Later,
Dan
