Long Beach Canada to Niagara Falls to Lockport, NY Sept 11 (77 miles)
I have ridden about 3100 miles so far on this trip. I am getting closer to Maine, little by little.
Got up early and got a good start. Got to Port Colburn and got on a nice bike trail to Fort Erie and made good time to there. Met a couple on the way to Niagara Falls that has been riding a tandem bike from California since May sometime. Reuben and Theresa. He retired recently from Del Monte I believe. They are close to my age. They have been riding for about 4300 miles from California. They started off camping but are staying in hotels now. They are headed to Portland, Maine. I asked them how they were doing on the trip and the lady spoke up and said at 2000 miles she had had it and they almost quit and went home. I asked her why and she said she was sick of looking at the backside of her husband for 2000 miles. She was sick of him steering, she was sick of riding, she was sick of her husband telling her where they were going etc. She said it almost cost them a divorce. I laughed. It never occurred to me how hard it would be to sit on the back seat of a tandem bicycle and look at the back of someone for 2000 miles. That would be tough. It would be easier for Lori because I have such a nice backside, and I am such a kind sweet husband, but that would be a tough position for someone I think. Anyway, they must have worked it out, because they are still riding toward Maine.
I went to a Canadian Hospital to see if they could help me with my Poison Ivy and they wanted $450 up front to see me. No good. I can wait till I get back to the USA. I stopped in Port Colburn and had a nice breakfast before going on to Port Erie.
I got to Niagara Falls and the Niagara River and they are very beautiful. There is a little more brick and mortar there than I thought there would be. Lots of people and tall buildings. The Falls were pretty cool but I was glad to get past the big city. I have some nice photos of the falls.
I got to Niagara Falls, NY and found a pharmacy. I nice old doctor in Emmett called me in a prescription for predizone to help my poison ivy, so maybe that will help with that problem. I got to LockPort, NY and found my way to the marina there on the Erie Canal and went to bed. Too lazy to pitch my tent in the little park there so I just put my sleeping bag under a tree and washed up and went to bed. They had a shower in the park but it closed at 5:00 so I didn’t get to use it. I just washed up with the good old baby wipes and went to bed. I woke up at some time in the night and a spider was in my sleeping bag crawling on my leg so I smashed it and went back to sleep. A little later I woke up again with a spider crawling on my ear and so I smashed that one also then spent the next few minutes digging the spider out of my ear. The joys of camping. Maybe there is a reason REI put netting on their tents. Now I know.
Sept 12. Lockport, NY to Bridgeport NY. (55 miles)
My poison ivy has gotten pretty bad and is spreading all over. It is pretty miserable so I decided to hole up at an Econo Lodge Motel for a couple days and see if it can get it to improve a little. So when I get to Bridgeport I am getting into a Motel for a while. I have the stuff I need to help my poison ivy now and it does seem to be improving little by little. The rash now only covers 99% of my body instead of 100%. I am really starting to feel great now.
I have been riding down a trail along side of the Erie Canal. The trail is dirt, but it is pretty flat and smooth and is not bad riding at all. The canal is so flat that I hardly ever have to ride up hills at all. I will go ahead and follow the Erie Canal past Rochester, NY. I should come close to reaching Palmyra on my next days ride. I have not been there before so I will stop to see the Hill Cumorah, and the other sites there in Palmyra.
There is a nice LDS Ward here in Brockport so I went to church on Sunday. It was only about 3 miles from the Motel. It is always nice to be able to go to church. The wards all feel like home. A nice elderly couple named Kay and Neoma Dodds invited me over for lunch and fed me a nice lunch and washed my clothes for me. Again, nice people wherever I go. Neoma asked me how I sorted my clothes and I told her I don’t sort them. I just throw them all in the washer and wash them and that is my underwear are slightly pink now because I wash them with my red towel. She looked at me and smiled and said her husband’s underwear was “white” because he was “a man”. Then she smiled and walked away. I thought it was funny. Anyway, my underwear are a little on the pink side. I will live.
